BRUNO – REVIEW
8.5 out of 10
It would be easy to dismiss Bruno Sacha Baron Cohen as a vulgar, slanderous, push the envelope, adult comedy it plays as a camera hidden in the crack, but is much more than that. Bruno Borat is really like a great social experiment with Cohen acting as our guide upset. Bruno is not as funny as Borat, but there are still plenty of moments that make you laugh to mourn. Bruno is offensive to gays? I really do not know … My perception Cohen is intolerant homophobic taunts not gay, but clearly opinions vary.
Bruno is a very cheerful, Austria talk show obsessed with fashion, fame and sex. He is unceremoniously dumped as host of Funkyzeit after causing a disaster in a NY fashion show while wearing a dress made entirely Velcro. Unable to find work in their homeland, Bruno decides to travel to America to seek fortune and fame and eccentricity occurs. The story is not really important as Bruno is actually a series of vignettes in which Cohen interacts with seemingly normal people and gets them to say outrageous, things wall and that is where his genius is full screen. In fact most scripted moments of the movie are there only to advance the plot and tend to bog down the process.
The objectives of the film around the world of celebrity politicians to rednecks and homophobes to stage more often than moms and Cohen arrives at the porthole, but there are times when it is out of your brand. In one case, Paula Abdul is unwittingly drawn into their trap, but she goes as fast as it comes and not many laughs extracted from the situation. Bruno's also about making a sex video with Ron Paul political and I was really shocked. To his credit, Paul has remained calm while Bruno is about him and, although it leaves a diatribe cords blasphemy, he feels justified. There's a hysterical moment where Bruno is released as an extra in the middle show and disturbs the scene that are rolling great comic effect. Stage mothers and fathers who are willing to do anything to land a concert for their children was a highlight for me. He even said he would allow her baby to get liposuction if it meant getting a gig. As dirty and vulgar as Bruno is, it really can be the reflection. I can not believe that there are people who allow their children to do some things that asks Bruno (I do not want to spoil).
Bruno is ready to do anything to become famous. At first attempts of becoming a movie star and when they did not decide to organize a celebrity talk show downtown. Look test the audience reaction to Bruno's talk show that offers dancing and gyrating his hips to techno music and a talking penis is hilarious. When her talk show not, Bruno is doing all it join the army to nearly inciting a riot on the set of The Richard Bey Show in their quest for fame. Cohen loves to push the envelope when it comes to obscene and certainly does not stop. Scenes with dildos and various sex toys, nude male and vulgar language abound, there is even a scene where Bruno gets her anus bleached.
Sacha Baron Cohen is more than an actor or comedian, he is a bright future performance artist to evoke a response, good or bad for your hearing. There really is no one like him on the planet and the closest comparison would be to the late (?), Great Andy Kaufman. Like Kaufman, Cohen always stays in character and not the rules the game. He is willing to do, say or wear anything to get a response. There are not many actors who would be willing to break out in a convention hall mortgage completely naked, naked man chasing another with a dildo. If nothing else, Cohen is the bravest performer there. In one scene, Bruno goes camping with three male hunters from the south and attempted to get one of them to sleep with him. This may be on the screen of only four minutes, but when think about the fact that Cohen actually spent all day and all night with these guys and never broke character, is nothing short of astonishing. At any time, these men might have decided Hogtie Bruno to a tree and leave him in the forest and actually … who can blame them? I marvel at the enormous courage that Cohen has to get in those extreme situations.
To summarize, Bruno, though not as funny as Borat, is a vulgar, obscene, depraved, push the limits, gross to comedy it is also enlightening and frightening at the same time. Like its star, the film is more than the eye and whether love or hate it, Bruno is quite the experience.
